LISTOWEL EMMETS  1-10  BALLYDONOGHUE  1-14

The first two teams out of the hat were the first to face off in the 2020 Bernard O’ Callaghan Memorial North Kerry Senior Football Championship, sponsored by McMunn’s Bar and Restaurant, Ballybunion on Saturday evening last, 5th Sept in Frank Sheehy Park, Listowel. A mouth-watering clash guaranteed to have drawn a big crowd but of course in the current climate, it was played behind closed gates. It was a historic occasion also in that it was the first time a game was streamed live and well done to all who facilitated this and all who availed of this were well rewarded. As soon as referee Seamus Mulvihill threw in the ball the game exploded to life and Jack Kennelly had the visitors ahead with a point from play with about 10 secs on the clock. He added another from a free in the 5th min before Davy Keane settled the home side into the game with a point from play. Emmets were playing with great purpose at this point and after turning over possession in the middle third Mark Galvin went on a surging run before picking out Ger McCarthy with a super pass on the edge of the square.Ger went to ground under pressure but any claims for a penalty were waved away by the referee and Ballydonoghue cleared their lines.Emmets continued to probe and when Davy Keane placed Darragh Lynch with a peach of a pass bearing down on goals, he made no mistake, giving Darragh O’ Shea no chance in the Ballydonoghue goals. With the gauntlet well and truly down Ballydonoghue upped their efforts.A Paul Kennelly shot for a point came back off the post to be gathered by the Emmets defence but while working it out an intercepted pass was worked by Jim Cremin to Darragh Sheehy to Jack Kennelly who blasted to the corner of the Emmets net to regain the lead for his side.A fisted point from his brother Paul and a lovely score from Darragh Sheehy had Ballydonoghue in front 1-04 to 1-01 at the first water break. It was a great contest at this point and with very little time afforded to players on the ball it was intense stuff with all ball keenly contested. A foul on Davy Keane was converted from a very difficult position by Sam Tarrant on the 20th min which Paul Kennelly cancelled out with a great score from play 3 mins later. Emmets dominated the remainder of the half. Cormac Mulvihill scored off his left from play, a surging run from Niall Collins led to a free converted by Sam Tarrant and on the stroke of half time a penetrating run from Ciaran Pierse set up Cormac Mulvihill to fist over his second point from play to leave the sides level on 1-05 a piece at the interval.Just prior to half-time Emmets were unfortunate to lose star defender Eddie Browne to injury and he was replaced by Daniel Sheehan while Brion O’ Seannachain was introduced at half-time for Kevin O’ Donnell for Ballydonoghue.

All to play for, rain started to drizzle down at the start of the second half.Sean Keane pointed after Tom McCarthy was fouled. The three Kennelly brothers combined for Paul to point from play.Sean Keane pointed another two frees in the 37th and 40th mins to give Emmets a 2pt lead 1-08 and 1-06. Jack Kennelly converted an outrageous free from the sideline and followed it with a point from play after a great run to level matters again.Emmets surged forward with Mark Galvin putting Ciaran Pierse through and his fisted effort for a point came back off the crossbar but it was Ballydonoghue who reacted first and cleared their lines to counterattack and win a free that Jack Kennelly again coaxed over with the outside of the right to leave the score at the second water break 1-09 to 1-08 in favour of Ballydonoghue. A length of the field move ended with Jack Foley scoring off his right, to be followed by another Paul Kennelly point from play to open a 3pt gap.Cormac Mulvihill off his right pointed but Ballydonoghue took over from this point and finished very strongly.Paul Kennelly kicked two fantastic points from a similar position of the pitch, one off his right and the other off his left and when Jack Foley pointed a minute later Ballydonoghue held a 5pt advantage with time running out. Sean Keane converted another free for Emmets before Seamus Mulvihill blew for full-time and Ballydonoghue joined Ballyduff and Brosna in the Quarter Final Draw on Sunday 13th September. The final score on the night was Listowel Emmets 1-10  Ballydonoghue 1-14.  Listowel can be proud of their performance, great work ethic and all their players gave their all. They are a young side overall and they will have many good days, there is no doubt.Mention must be made of a breathtaking piece of fielding by Darragh Leahy in the second half who along with Tom McCarthy held sway in the midfield area until the final minutes. Ballydonoghue are a more seasoned team, highly regarded and rightly so. They seem to be improving as the year progresses and while all their players carried their weight it has to be said that Paul and Jack Kennelly were outstanding and some of the score taking was of the highest order.Along with Jack Foley these three players form an inside line bristling with talent, both feet in use by all three, and on an on day will eviscerate any defence. Robert Bunyan and John Kennedy did a great job on commentary/analysis and Seamus Mulvihill and his officials handled affairs very well. Thanks to Listowel Emmets for having their facility in such good shape and for turning the floodlights on as the light faded.Drone footage at the start of the streaming programme showed it in a great light and no doubt there will be further games in the near future.

Castleisland Desmonds 2.20 v Fingue 2.14
This was the second of our opening round games of the weekend and Desmonds were out of the traps with a speed that took the home side near on 20 minutes to get up to the pace of the game.  Within the first minute of the game Maurice Hickey had a fisted ball over the bar, again it was Desmonds full forward Cian W. O'Connor who converted a free, quickly added to by a point from play in the fourth minute.  Again it was Desmonds Tomas Lynch who split the posts,  nothing Finuge did could stop the fast running game that the Desmond brought to the pitch.  It took until the seventh minute with a long range point from Pat Corridan (Finuge) to rally his team. The reply came in the tenth minute again from wing forward Tomas Lynch (Desmonds) and from here until the water break in the eighteen minute Desmonds added two goals from full forward Cian W. O'Connor and a point from Thomas Hickey. After the water break in the twenty minute Desmonds Thomas Hickey again added to the tally now leaving 2.06 between the sides.  Finuge started to chip away at the deficit added three points, a point a piece from Maurice Corridan, Darragh Mackessy (f)  and  Pat Corridan.  The final score of the half for Desmonds came in the twenty- sixth minuet from the boot of Adam Donoghue.  From here on it was know all Finuge four more points to there tally before the half time whistle came from  Darragh Mackessy, Maurice Corridan, and Pat Corridan to bring the half time score Finuge 0.08 v Desmonds 2.08

Desmonds seemed to now realise that this game was slipping from there grasp and added four points before the full time whistle to bring the sides level at 2.13 each.
Into extra time with finish on the day for all games this year and it was the visitors who found there second wind and pushed on to secure there place in the Quarter Finals of the Bernard O Callaghan Senior Championship adding five points in the first half of extra time to Finuge no score.  Second half of extra time and Finuge managed a pointed free from Pat Corridan but Desmonds held tough and added two more points from Luka Brosnan and the talented full forward Cian W O'Connor full time Desmonds 2.20 v Finuge 2.14

Knocknagoshel 1.11 Moyvane 1.10

This was the last game of our first round games this weekend which saw Moyvane take on Knocknagoshel at Con Brosnan Park Moyvane.

It was Moyvane that was first to put a score on the board after 8 mins with a left legged kick from play from Moyvane’s Timmy Noonan. This was followed shortly by a marvellous goal by Moyvanes Niall Mulvihill and another point from free by Martin Stack which put Moyvane in the lead in the tenth minute by 1.2 to no score for their opponents.  Been a man down for 10 mins Knocknagoshel however settled into the game and returned two points from play by Dylan Curtin and James Walsh.  This brought to score line to just a kick of a ball at the 1st water break where Moyvane lead 1.02 to Knocknagoshel 0.2

After the water break Knocknagoshel’s James Walsh scored another point from play.  This was followed shortly by a point from free in the 20th minute by Edmond Walsh which put the teams only a point apart at this stage of the game. The game started to turn into a tight battle from this juncture with both Movyane and Knocknagosel scoring two points each in the last 10 minutes of the 1st half.  The half-time score was Moyvane 1.4 to Knocknagoshel 0.6.

Into the Second half of the game and it was Knocknagoshel that were off the quick start with 2 points from play in the first 4 minutes by Kieran Downey and Edmond Walsh, that and a missed goal in the 8th minute showed the willpower of this north Kerry side.   They scored three more consecutive points from play between the 9th and the 12th minute bringing the score to Knocknagoshel 0.11 points to Moyvane 1.4.  Moyvane’s first score did not arrive until the 14th minute when Martin Stack pointed a high ball in to score a point.

This brought the scoreline to Knocknagoshel leading the game 0.11 Moyvane 1.5 at the 2nd half water break

Once this water break was over it looked like Knocknagoshel were finding their pace and a missed goal by Michael Walsh in the 20th minute showed the commitment the Knocknagoshel side had to win this game.  At this point it looked like Moyvane where after drinking magic water as they scored for 4 points shortly afterwards with no return from Knocknagoshel, It was Martin Stack scoring all four points whilst a missed goal which just rolled off into the sideline in the 27th minute by Shane Stack also proved Moyvane’s true determination in this game to be one point up on the 29th minute of the second half. Moyvane 1.09 to Knocknagoshels 0.11. This determination showed through in another point on the 31st minute with a great score from Shane Stack with still no return from Knocknagoshel in the closing minutes of the game.  It was a tight net affair for the remainder of the game and with Knocknagoshel a player down the score and another point from Moyvane’s Tadhg McEvoy it was now Moyvane leading by 2 points Moyvane 1.10 to Knocknagoshels 0.11 points.  It looked like it would be Moyvane’s day but with a flick of a ball into the net by Knocknagoshel’s No 8 Kieran Downey in the 36th minute that saved the day for Knocknagoshel securing their place with this wonderful goal in the North Kerry Quarter Finals with a scoreline of Knocknagoshel 1.11 to Moyvane 1.10
