Keane's SuperValu Minor Football Championship. RD 3

North Kerry    1-12        East Kerry   1-10

Report by Jack Hennessy

North Kerry Minor footballers continued their 100% run in the Keane's SuperValu County Minor Football Championship. RD 3 at the Fossa G A A Grounds on Monday August 1 and by virtue of this latest victory they have qualified for the latter stages of the competition. The East Kerry men would have gone into this game as pre-match favourites but North Kerry who have impressed in all their games up to now continued that form into this latest challenge and dug out a hard earned but deserved victory.

The opening half got underway with Darragh O Keeffe, North Kerry and East Kerrys Calumn Cronin exchanging scores inside the 5th minute and this was to be the story of that opening half which saw the teams level on 5 occasions. It was end to end football and by the 15th minute Cormac Dillon,(f) and Eddie Healy swopping points with Cathal O Donoghue. (2) leaving the score 3pts each. A minute later the impressive Darragh O Keeffe put the boys from the North ahead once again.Colin O Callaghan levelled up the tie once more in the 17th minute. However 3mts later Cathal O Donoghue struck for the first goal of the game, opening up a 3pt lead; 1-4 to 0-4.The North Kerry men hit back immediately and points coming from, Cormac Dillon, (3), Darragh O Keeffe and Oisin Healy with East Kerrys only reply from Keelan O Shea that saw North Kerry lead at the break; North Kerry 0-9, East Kerry 1-4. On the change over North Kerry extended their lead further with Oisin Healy finding the net in the 5th minute and Jack Enright and Luke Rochford adding points. North Kerry 1-11, East Kerry 1-5.For the remainder of the game the North Kerry defence were under pressure as their opponents were coming forward in droves in search of scores that would get them back in the game. Sean Finnegan, Keelan O Shea, Colin O Callaghan and Cathal O Donoghue (2) cut the deficit to a single point as we headed for injury time. However Aaron Carey put a bit of daylight between the sides when he lofted over a very valuable score in injury time.Overall a very enjoyable contest between two evenly matched sides despite the inclement weather conditions.

North Kerry Minors now face Austin Stacks in a quarter final Monday 8th of August @ 6.30 in Castleisland.

UNDER 15 DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP. ROUND 1

CUP COMPETITION

Report by Jack Hennessy

Tralee District   1-14      North Kerry   1-13

Denis Dowling Park, Coolard was the venue for this first round U15 District Championship clash with Tralee District and after a trilling last quarter in which North Kerry came from been 1-12 to 0-7 down to draw level on the 30th minute and after having to suffer the agony of 2 goal line clearances by Tralee defence and then deep into injury time the outstanding Ronan O Carroll converted a 30 meter free to deny the North Kerry boys at least a share of the spoils. The opening half saw Conor Sweeney kick over a neat point inside the opening minute but for the remainder of this half Tralee District had it more or less to themselves as they dominated possession for the bigger part of those 30 minutes. However North Kerry did have their moments but scoring seemed a bit of a problem as Tralee packed their defence and were quick on the break and were sharper on the scoring department. In attack Ronan O Carroll, 1-9 and Ryan O Driscoll were causing big problems. Ryan O Driscoll, Ronan O Carroll, Gearoid White and  Jamie McCarthy, added first half points while Conor Sweeney, 3pts, Keighan Moloney and Jack Enright replied for North Kerry and at the break it was Tralee District 0-11 North Kerry 0-5. On resumption North Kerry added a few substitutes which were to bring more fight into their game later; but it was still the Tralee boys that were picking off their scores and when Ronan O Carroll soloed through and sent a powerful shot to the back of the net in the 5th minute it looked an uphill struggle for North Kerry as they trailed by 1-12 to 0-6. Certainly an inspirational point from out on the sideline from excellent wing back Michael Coonahan lifted his side no end and they laid siege on the Tralee goals at every opportunity. Then half time substitute Leigh Meehan somehow found space and he billowed the net from close range. Now it was down to a 4pt margin and with a sting in their tail the North Kerry boys lofted over some lovely points through Rory O Connell, Conor Sweeney, Leigh Meehan, Keighan Moloney and on the 30mt mark after the latter player drew the teams level at 1-13 each. Play continued from the kickout and after a turnover Ronan Carroll was fouled and he duly slotted the winner deep into injury time. Overall probably the Tralee side may have been the better side but one must credit the North Kerry side for a tremendous comeback and were most unlucky not to have at least shared the points. Next game will be against Kenmare Shamrocks on Wednesday August 10th with venue to be confirmed.

Team; North Kerry; Brian Dineen, Tadhg O Connor, John Carmody, Darragh O Connor, Ivan Conway, Shane Stack, Michael Coonahan, 1pt,  Gavin O Keeffe, Ruairi O Connell, 4pts, capt, lee Mulvihill, Pat Brosnan, Daithi Keane Tyrell, Jack Enright, 1pt,  Conor Sweeney, 5pts, Keighan Moloney, 1pt.
