Beale GAA   07/10/2020

A deflated, sombre mood hung over team and supporters as it was not our day in Connolly Park on Sunday. Losing out by the bare minimum, we were left on the wrong side of the result at the final whistle in the semi-final of the County Junior Club Championship.

A strong cross-field, breeze made play difficult for both sides, with the swirling breeze controlling the ball and making it difficult to judge shots. We started much the better in the opening half, being first off the mark and leading at the first half water break by 0-5 to 0-4. Castlegregory got their foot in the game shortly after, pointing a free and took advantage of a mistake in our defence to rattle the net approaching the half hour mark.

Trailing 1-5 to 0-6 at the interval, we hit back two early points, levelling the score by taking advantage of the poor kickout. However, our opponents powered on from this, scoring three unanswered points and another goal, ten minutes after the second half got underway. We now trailed by six points and a great attacking move brought us back to within three points, as we raised the green flag within two minutes. Just 2 points separated the teams at the water break, 1-9 to 2-8.

The last quarter was physically demanding. Both sides made their impact known as the tackles were hard and cards were issued. Tempers flared as both sides were guilty of indiscipline and we were reduced to fourteen men, picking up a red card for a second bookable offence.

We added late points and the wind played havoc with possible kickable scores. In a hectic finale, Castlegregory maintained their advantage, as we scrambled for that elusive point to force the game into extra time. We got a chance to draw level but alas it was not to be. And so ended our hopes of a place in a county final. Time ran out and we ultimately fell just short on the day,  1-12 to 2-10.
