BERNARD O CALLAGHAN MEMORIAL CHAMPIONSHIP, the McMunns Bar and Restaurant, Ballybunion Sponsored Bernard O Callaghan Memorial North Kerry Senior Football Championship Round 1 is awaiting our senior footballers on this Sunday September 13thth at Shannon Park, Tarbert, 2pm as we take on Tarbert who will be going in to this tie as firm favourites and rightly so as they can boast of some top quality players led by Kerry footballer, Shane Enright who is leading by example along with Gerard O Sullivan, Cillian Langan, Kevin Enright, Mark Buckley to mention a few. These sides had wildly contrasting fortunes in the County Junior Club Championship with the Shannonsiders qualifying for the business end of the competition while Asdee failed to win either of their 3 games and now will play in the County Novice Championship. However, one would imagine there will be a kick when it comes to North Kerry Championship as Asdee seems to be able to raise their game which has been proved down through the years as some of the so-called top sides will know.  They will be depending on a number of their senior campaigners to lead the way and certainly Darragh Keane who is playing outstanding football at the minute will have a big say in what way the result will go; Eoin Kennedy, Martin Collins, Kieran Kelly, Darren Russell and Eoin Tydings are some others who can hold their own with any opposition.  However,  the depth in the squad is not as strong in numbers as the opposition and  even though Asdee would be well down the pecking order by the bookies to win this tie; the club spirit will help them along and with nothing to lose and under no pressure what-so-ever this team will not be travelling to make up the numbers and having been in this situation on a few different occasions in the past and given little chance this could be the rock that the opposition might perish on. Still it’s a big ask as Tarbert have been performing quite well down the years in the championship and will be anxious to get off to a good start and bring back the Eamon O Donoghue Memorial Cup to the Shannonside; last achieved in 2010 defeating Listowel Emmets after a replay.  Still it’s all on the day; certainly, the North Kerry Senior Championship can be a great leveller and if Asdee can lift their game which they are well capable of; they can be a match for anybody and that includes the so-called top dogs of this championship.
