ASDEE G A A

NORTH KERRY LEAGUE

SEMI FINAL.  A competition that got underway in ealy February is still ongoing and still causing problems as to the actual playing  of this long standing McCarthys Insurance Brokers Senior league Division 2 semi  final. The latest episode was down for decision for Sunday last June 23rd in O Sullivan Park, Finuge at 2pm but an e mail from the North Kerry Football on the morning of the game stated that Duagh were unable to field a tean which has now been referred to the C C C of the Board.  Asdee v Duagh due to have taken place in Brosna on Sunday March 17th (St. Patricks Day) was called off due to the difficult weather conditions we had been experiencing at the particular time with all pitches supposidly declaired unplayable. This was not Asdees fault that the game wasnt played as it had been fixed for either (Sat/Sun/Mon) of that weekend with then a 4pm agreed between both Clubs on Saturday; but afterwards Duagh had a problem with that day; fair enough; but then Asdee even offered to travel to Duagh to play the game but all fell on deaf ears. Then an e mail from the North Kerry Board on the Saturday afternoon that Brosna was the venue Sunday 17th at 12 noon. With all due respects this is not  the first time that Asdee became a looser in situations like this. Certainly to be fair in its wisdom by the North Kerry Board on fixing this game on the day that was in it, with a 12 noon throw- in time and a 55 Kilometors plus  road trip dosent make a lot of sense on that particular day but Asdee were once again prepaired to travel and willing to fulfill the fixture;  But then would you believe the game was called off on the morning of the game . So we await with interest the next episode of the North Kerry League Division 2 semi final decision and with senior teams already having been thrown out by the District Board out due to non appearance; what will it will actually throw up this time?. Knocknagoshel await the winners.

NATIONAL SCHOOL

St. Marys, Asdee GAA would like to congratulate Asdee National School on their 50 years Anniversary of the present building which replaced the original stone building.

An enjoyable function was held in the school last Wednesday evening to celebrate the 50th Anniversary.

The event also honoured the graduating sixth class and saw the Bun Scoile team receiving their North Kerry medals.

Looking back through the years  this column would not permit me space to mention all the past pupils who excelled  in their various professions that attended the School. So we have a look back on the G A A and other sporting achievements side of things; this school has produced some top class footballers and especially are proud to say that seven All Ireland Senior Football medals came its way with Paud and Eamon O Donoghue along with John Kennedy, and of course  the famous Croke Memorial Medal (Jack Moriarty) which is certainly historical as  it was in that Croke Memorial  Final 1913 after a replay between Kerry the winners and Louth that attracted a record crowd at the time of 32,000 and a cash flow of £1,930 and it was that windfall which enabled the G A A to purchase the then Jones Road. Thus did Croke Park come into existence and Asdees Jack Moriarty was one of the players who helped to buy the now famous ground. Paud is the holder of All Ireland Senior (2), 5 National League, All Ireland Minor and U21, 3 County Senior Championship, Eamon, 2 All Ireland Senior, 5 National League and Railway Cup 3 County Senior Championship, John Kennedy, 3; along with Junior and Inter Firm. Mike Walsh, Junior All Ireland,  All Ireland ladies,(Emer McElligott U14), Moira McElligott, All Irelands at Novice, Intermediate and Senior Womens Boxing Elete Irish Championship at featherweight and represented Ireland at European and International level and was ranked 17th in the World after 2 seasons internationals ;(first Kerry woman to do so),  All Ireland Colleges, St. Brendans, Killarney, Donal Kissane,  Minor All Ireland, Tom Sheehy, All Ireland 7-a-side and Inter firm Kerry Co Op, Donie Mulvihill, Junior, All Ireland Club Championship, (Liam Horgan, Baltanglass, Wicklow), All Ireland Freshers I. T. Tralee, (Eoin Kennedy) John Joe O Carroll, All Ireland, Inter Firm, Burlington, Others Munster medal holders too numerous to mention included, Munster, Vocational, Colleges, Clerical Officers.
