Beale GAA   30/10/2017

Beale and Ballyduff/Duagh minors have to do it all over again as they played out a draw in the final of the North Kerry Championship, Division 2, on Sunday. Played in ideal conditions, we had victory snatched from us at the final whistle.

In a sun-drenched Coolard, Beale took on combination side. After an even first half, with misses from both sides, Beale had the edge at the short whistle by 1-3 to 3 points. The second half saw both sides miss many opportunities. Beale pulled away and had a 3-point lead and it looked like the title was heading to the seaside when a goal-mouth scramble saw Ballyduff/Duagh awarded a penalty which was converted. Final score 2-4 to 1-7. We await details of the replay.

Beale lined out as: Gavin Casey, Diarmaid O' Mahony, Jack O'Sullivan, David Hennessy, Tommy O'Neill (capt), Fintan Linnane, Fionnán Toomey, Pádraig Holly, Bernard O'Callaghan, Callum McSweeney, Seán Maloney, Luke O'Donovan and Eric Daly. Substitutes: Barry O'Neill for Callum McSweeney, Jordan O'Rourke for Luke O'Donovan, Paddy O'Rourke for Eric Daly (inj.), Conor Toomey, Conor Breen and Darragh Kissane.

2015 finalists, Brosna, will be the opposition when Beale seniors contest the quarter final of the North Kerry Championship on Sunday, November 12th in Duagh. Throw-in at 1 o'clock.

Our Under-21 North Kerry Championship quarter final against St Senans has been postponed until November 19th at noon in Coolard. We join forces again this year with Ballylongford and Asdee.

We await details of date and venue for our semi-final of the North Kerry Junior Championdhip against Ballyduff.

Another 'spooktacular' occasion on Halloween Night when the Beale zombies take over the town for Beale GAA's Halloween 'Tunnel of Terror'. This is the fifth annual event and promises to be even bigger and spookier with trojan work going on behind the scenes. Prepare to be scared!

A plaque has been erected at the clubhouse, acknowledging Life Members of Beale GAA Club, honouring a commitment made over twenty years ago. When the club faced financial difficulties in the early 1990s, over forty local people paid £250 each for Life Membership, which helped reduce the financial burden on the club. Beale GAA Club acknowledges the contribution of the plaque sponsor, who wishes to remain anonymous.

In recent weeks, Beale GAA bid farewell to one of our oldest members and former chairman, Ned Purtill, who passed to his eternal reward. The Purtill name has a long traditional link with local football. In the 1950s, Ned crossed the parish boundaries and joined another strong footballing family, the McMahons. He played with St Patrick's Club, spent a term as club chairman and was an active member of the executive committee, as well as been a well-known referee.

An accomplished footballer, Ned passed on his Gaelic skills to his sons, Mike and Eddie, and daughter, Kathleen, who all proudly wore the green and red of Beale. The next generation continued the family tradition, with his grand-daughters playing for Beale Ladies. During research for our history book, "Sand in our Boots", Ned enjoyed sharing with us his extensive memories of football in a bygone era. Beale GAA Club extend sympathies to the Purtill family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dhíl.
