County Junior Legue.
On a misty May evening, Friday last, at the peak of Mountcoal, the second round of the county junior league tie between St Senans and Clounmacon took place. The late throw in of 8pm didn't help matters and the damp humid conditions brought out the dreaded midges and they took great advantage taking chunks from all who attended, players, supporters and officials alike, even before the game had started. However they didn't halt proceedings and one minute after the throw in, a Joe Joe Grimes attack resulted in a close in free and Chris lyons opened the account and 4 minutes later, Senans, from a free replied. The slippery conditions were not helpful to either side, however it didn't stop Brian Greaney landing one from play, yet the Saints replied swiftly to level again. Lyons scored his second of the evening from all of 35 metres from play and he added one from the standing position soon after to end the first half scoring and give the visitors a 2 point cushion, 0-2 to 0-4. After the team talk and a good bit of scratching, the second half resumed and Stephen McCarthys good work produced a tap over free for lyons. Great work soon followed by Greaney on the dressing room side and though under pressure he managed to find Mike Horgan passing him at pace and he in turn stabbed it low, expertly to the bottom corner. The home team were now in trouble it seemed, down six and wasteful at scoring opportunities. Five minutes later they scored their first of the second half and both sides then, were guilty of giving the ball away on several occasions, though it must be stressed that the deterioration of conditions was a major factor. After a short spell Chris Lyons added another free and Senans attacked again with vigour but the Black and Amber back line stood firm. With 22 minutes gone, the home side pulled back a point and soon after added a close in free. As the darkness crept ever closer and the mist became heavier, there were to be no more scores and Denny O' Sullivan, well bitten himself at that stage, blew up for full time. The visitors had earned a well deserved away victory to an under strength St. Senans side. However, twas well noted that Clounmacon were also missing some regular starters. Having said that, those who deputised did very well indeed and will give the management team some things to ponder on, which is no bad thing indeed. Clounmacon best served on the night by all in the back line, particularly McEnery, O Mahony and the ever improving Scanlon, Grimes and O Sullivan lorded midfield and Greaney, Lyons and Horgan up front. Final score St. Senans 0-5. Clounmacon 1-06
