County League Division 3 Round 1 Result:

Brosna 0-09 Ballydonoghue 1-08

If Cheltenham has thought us anything this week it's that there are no sure things. Saying that though, when two North Kerry teams face off in an important county league tie you can bet there'll be no more than a score or two in it and if your money was on a schemozzle or two breaking out then you'd have made your money back and then some.

Indeed this was a tight, tense affair with the two sides neck and neck for the hour decided, ultimately, by a last gasp goal resulting from a high hopeful ball into the Brosna square.

When proceedings got underway it was Ballydonoghue who started the brighter and after an opening salvo lead by two points. However, the longer the game went on the more the Brosna defence got to grips with the Ballydonoghue attack reducing them to potshots from distance and awkward angles. At the other end patient, intelligent play was rewarded with three fine points in particular coming from Dave Curtin, Eamonn Kiely and Maurice O Keeffe. At half time Brosna lead by the narrowest of margins. 5 points to 4.

The second half was tit for tat throughout with little change being gotten out of either defence. With the finishing line in sight and a place in the winners enclosure looking likely Brosna just couldn't find the accelerator to put the game beyond doubt, coughing up possession at vital moments leading to the aforementioned winning goal palmed in by a grateful Ballydonoghue forward. If people say that 2 points is a dangerous lead then a 1 point lead is downright perilous with Brosna now having to look to manufacture a shot at goal and victory in the dying moments ,however, it was not to be. Sport often proves to be a cruel mistress and leaving empty handed from Coolard having held the whip hand for so long is as cruel as it gets.

Team and Scorers: Conor Kiely, Mícheál Murphy, Shane Fitzmaurice, Aaron Cahill, Kiearn Horan, Eamonn Kiely (1pt), Maurice O' Keeffe (1pt), Dave Curtin (1pt), Shane Curtin, Seamus O Connor, Timmy Finnegan, Peter Curtin, Adam Barry (3pts), Johnathan O Donnell (1pt), Kieran O Donnell. Subs. Tom McGoldrick (2pts) for Kieran O Donnell, Eamon Prendiville for Peter Curtin, Cillian Keane for Seamus O Connor.
