SENIOR FOOTBALL
A continuous downpour throughout the game made conditions
very difficult for the teams and officials for the quarter final of the
North Kerry Championship game between Finuge and Beale in Moyvane last
Sunday. Allowing for the rain and the playing of a first round
replay prior to the quarter final the pitch was in relatively good
condition and a tough hard game before a good sized attendance ensued. At the
end of a low scoring first half Beale with a goal by Ger O'Gorman in
the 22nd minute led 1-1 to 0-3. Finuge's scores in that period came
from James Flaherty, Raymond Galvin and Fergus Fitzmaurice. Finuge
dominated the third quarter and thanks to points by Raymond Galvin, Maurice
Corridan and Conor Fitzmaurice they led 0-6 to 1-2 by the 40th minute. Two
goals in as many minutes stretched Finuge's lead to seven points,
the first when Stephen Power blasted a rebound from Gary Hogan's blocked
effort to the net and the second when a speculative ball from Maurice
Corridan deceived the Beale defence and ended up in the net. Beale were on top
for the remainder of the game and following a goal after a quick free in the
52nd minute they narrowed the lead, mainly through James McMahon to one
point as the game went into time added on. A Fergus Fitzmaurice point from a
free in the 64th minute relieved the pressure on Finuge however and ensured
victory on a final score of Finuge 2-7 Beale 2-5. Team: Cillian
Fitzmaurice; Declan McCarthy, Chris Allen, Conor Fitzmaurice (0-1); Paudie Galvin,
John Griffin, Keefer Roche; Maurice Corridan (1-1, 0-1f); John McCarthy; Darren
O'Sullivan, Fergus FItzmaurice (0-2f), Raymond Galvin (capt) (0-2); Stephen
Power (1-0), Enda Galvin, James Flaherty (0-1). Subs who played: Gary Hogan,
Michael Stackpoole, Jack Corridan.
Next weekend the action turns to the final round of the County League. Finuge
are at home to Listowel Emmets on Sunday next at 2.30 p.m. A draw woud ensure
Finuge's promotion to Division 1 as Division 2 champions.
UNDER 16S
Finuge u16s secured a great win over hot favourites Listowel in a keenly contested Div. 2 quarter final.
last Sunday morning in wintry conditions at O'Sullivan Park. Both teams gave their best with Listowel starting better and racing into a lead. Finuge got better as the first half went on and pegged them back and went in with a two point lead. Finuge were the stronger and more composed team in the second half and despite a late Listowel rally ended the game three points ahead on a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-9. Next up in the semi final are St. Senans next Sunday. Well done and best of luck to all involved.
