TONY FLAVIN

One of Ballydonoghue's most gifted footballers in the mid 60s was Tony Flavin from Blanemore. He was an exciting footballer to watch with his brilliant high fielding and his deadly solo runs and his sidesteps. He was a prominent member of Ballydonoghue and Shannon Rangers teams at an early age. He was first sub on the Kerry Minor football team defeated in the All Ireland Minor final of 1965 by Derry. He won Munster Junior and Under 21 medals in 1968 with Kerry and looked set for Senior glory when like many of his colleagues emigrated to London.

He was an enormous loss to Ballydonoghue and Kerry Football but a tremendous gain to the Kingdom football club in London. He served the club there with distinction as a player and Administrator. In his time with the Kingdom he won six championship medals in a row between 1973 and 1978. He won 2 All Ireland 7-a-side in Dublin in 1976 and 1977.He won an All Ireland Junior medal when London defeated Dublin in 1971. The Kingdom also won 8 Leagues in  Tonys time with them. He served as Chairman for a period of 3 years; 1979 to 1981. He was Clubman of the year in 1977. He also won many athletic medals, particularly in track and field events. Much could be written about Tony Flavin and his achievements but the above list is certainly impressive by any standards.

He would certainly have played a major part in Kerry senior teams in the late 60s and 70s if he had been in this country. When he returned back to Ireland he resided in Tralee and played club football with Na Gaeil club. In fact the year Na Gaeil won the Novice championship they ironically defeated Ballydonoghue in the Quarter final.

Sympathies to his wife Rita, his family Fiona and Yvonne and sister Rita (UK) his adored grandson Cameron Anthony, Yvonne’s partner Kevin, brother-in-law Joe, sisters-in-law Anne, Mary, Kathleen and Jose and to his nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
