BALLYDONOGHUE HEALTHY CLUB: Ballydonoghue Gaa Healthy Club Initiative
was launched by Mr. Brendan Griffin, TD, Minister for Sport, at
The Thatch Bar, Lisselton on Friday 22nd  February 2019.
There was a great turn out from all of the community.
Ballydonoghue Gaa club is one of 92 clubs nationwide selected to
participate in the GAA’s Healthy Club project which is now in Phase 3
and involves 150 clubs across the 32 counties. We are one of only 4
clubs in Kerry. Almost 220 clubs applied to participate in Phase 3
highlighting the progressive nature of Ballydonoghue Gaa.
Ballydonoghue  Gaa installed a defibrillator and trained 32 people
from within the club and wider community thanks to funding received
through the Gaa’s Healthy Club project in partnership with Irish Life.
The training will be of benefit to the whole community- hopefully we
will not have to use it but we have 32 people who can help if called
upon. Ballydonoghue  Gaa have signed  a smoke free policy on our
grounds. We have also signed an agreement to use Bio Propane Gas–
which is carbon free - i.e. no carbon footprint. Every Thursday
evening we are doing the lights on initiative in conjunction with
Operation Transformation. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join
us for a walk around the pitch. We have introduced the Healthy Eating
Initiative where we have replaced fizzy drinks and salty snacks with
fruit juice and healthy snacks. Over the next 12 months Ballydonoghue
Gaa Club will deliver programmes that support members physical,
emotional and social well being such as Fun & Run games to include
children with disabilities, a Mental Health Awareness Campaign and we
will continue with the County Clean Up Campaign. The Healthy Club
Project is supported by Healthy Ireland, the HSE, the National Office
for Suicide Prevention and Irish Life, the award winning project aims
to transform clubs into hubs for health in their communities. The Gaa
already makes a significant contribution to the health of the
population through the promotion and provision of Gaelic Games.
Participating Healthy Clubs seek to expand their positive influence
beyond the playing field by implementing policies, partnerships and
programme designed to support the physical, emotional and social
well being of our communities.

Well done to everyone who took part in the night’s celebrations and also to all the members of the community that took part to make the night a one to remember. Special thanks to Brendan Griffin and also to our musicians form the parish that entertained the crowd a big thanks to the group in the novelty act for Scor that gave us a taste of what they will be doing on Saturday night in cork city hall. A lot of the credit goes to Eileen Bungan and her healthily Initiate Committee and this needs acknowledged  all the work that has gone in so far with courses and late nights travelling to conferences, well done all and keep up the good work.
