Beale GAA   23/09/2018

For GAA enthusiasts, the North Kerry Championship shortens the winter months, with local bragging rights up for grabs. Named in honour of the late Bernie O'Callaghan, former chairman of Beale GAA Club and of the North Kerry GAA Board, it is s a much sought after title. In 2014, we bridged a 25-year gap, bringing the cup back to the seaside for the eighth time. We had been knocking on the door of North Kerry success and this was our third final in four years.

The following year’s campaign, though, was short-lived. Our journey came to an end when we succumbed to Tarbert in the quarter final. Then in 2016, we exited in the first round, yielding to the stronger challenges of Desmonds.

A great start to last year’s campaign gave us the upperhand on 2016 finalists, St Senans, in the opening round. It was definitely a game of two halves in the quarter final when we took on Brosna. Eventhough leading by five points at the interval, we ended up three points adrift at the final whistle.

And so it begins. We kick off the 2018 North Kerry Championship on Sunday, October 14th, when we travel to Ballyduff for the opening round. Throw in at 2.30. These two teams last met in the championship in the first round in 2015. Despite playing against a very strong breeze in Ballybunion on that October Bank Holiday Monday, we had most of the possession in the first half. However, this was not reflected on the scoreboard. Scores came more easily for Ballyduff and we went in at the interval, trailing by a point. We settled better in the second half and went on to secure a place in the quarter final.

Prior to this game, the teams had battled it out in the 2014 semi-final. For excitement, this game surpassed all, with the constant ebb and flow, the do or die attitude and whole-hearted effort between two teams who dared not bend a knee to their opponents. We look forward to another thrilling encounter in mid-October.

Beale Under-21s take on Moyvane/Tarbert in the quarter final on Saturday, 27th October, at 3 o’clock. Venue to be confirmed. Ourvminors are also pitted against Moyvane/Tarbert in the semi-final, while our juniors received a bye in the first round.

Beale GAA executive committee is actively progressing towards phase 2 of the dressing room development. We are currently pursuing the tendering process and, once the National Lottery criteria is satisfied, it is our target that construction work will commence by Christmas.

A busy schedule off the field too for the club. It's that time of year again when we are planning our annual Xmas event which takes place on Saturday, December 22nd. Stay tuned for more details in upcoming weeks. Plans are under way also for Beale GAA's Halloween 'Tunnel of Terror'. This is the sixth annual event and promises to be even spookier than ever. Prepare to be scared on Halloween night when the Beale zombies take over the town! More details in next few weeks.
