SENIOR CO. LEAGUE DIVISION 5 - ROUND 11 - 3/9/2017 2017-09-03 21:58:00

Asdee 0-10 Cordal 3-18

Having gone through the League unbeaten, Cordal were crowned Credit Union County League Division 5 champions at Stack Park, Ballybunion, on Sunday last, where they defeated the home side in a one-sided contest that was played at 13 a-side.  From goalkeeper Sean O Ciarbhain to number 13 Kieran Griffin, this was a total team performance, with 13 players along with substitutes getting on the scoreboard.  However, the name of Philip O Connor deserves special mention, scorer of 2-04, all in the opening half, and was without doubt the man of the match, giving the Asdee rearguard plenty headaches.  Inside the opening minute, both teams exchanged points with Philip O Connor and Eoin Kennedy on target.  However, this was as
good as it got for the home side, with Cordal completely dominating proceedings for the remainder of the game. Goals from Philip O Connor,(3mts) and T J O Connor, 6mts later saw the visitors lead 2-05 to 0-03 after the first quarter, as two pointed frees from Eoin Tydings, who was easily Asdee’s best performer and Mike Breen was Asdee’s only reply. James Kelly, the Asdee keeper, kept out a goal-bound shot with a tremendous save, before Philip O Connor got his second goal in the 20th minute, followed by some well taken points.  At the break, it was Cordal 3-09 Asdee 0-05.

The same trend continued during the second half, as Cordal were to use up their bench but, in fairness, eventhough always playing second fiddle, Asdee battled away but it was the visitors who were piling on the scores.  Sean Walsh, who came on as a substitute, kicked 3 very good points as Kieran O Donoghue, Kieran Enright and Philip Griffin added further minors.  Eoin
Tydings got 3 back for Asdee, but it was never going to make any difference to the final scoreline:  Asdee 0-10 Cordal 3-18.

After the game County Board Developement Officer, Eamon Whelan was on hand to present the Cordal captain, Philip O Connor with the winning shield amid great jubilation amongst the huge band of supporters that travelled to cheer on the champions of 2017.
