SENIOR CO. LEAGUE DIVISION 5 - ROUND 8 - 15/7/2017
2017-07-15 01:22:00
Churchill 4-15 Kilgarvan 0-11.
Both teams came into this match just outside the top three and looking to keep touch with the leaders in search of a promotion place. Churchill started brightly with a point from Dara
O’Shea and could have been in for early goals, but for some fine defending from Michael O’Sullivan and Keith Harrington. After ten minutes, Churchill led by three points to one, but Kilgarvan took control of the game for the next ten minutes and registered five unanswered points, including three from full forward Patrick O’Shea. Churchill regained a grip at midfield through Matt Finnerty and Thomas Lenihan and scored five of their own on the trot, with four from Ivan Parker and another for O’Shea. Kieran O’Sullivan temporarily
stopped the rot for the visitors with a point, when a goal might have been on. However, Churchill fired over three more points before the break, through Pa McCarthy, Parker and Michael O’Brien to give the hosts a four point lead at halftime (0-11) to (0-07).
Churchill really killed off the game from the restart with 2-02 without reply to lead by 12 points, 2-13 to 0-07, the goals coming from Michael O’Brien straight from the throw in, and the second from Dara O’Shea. Pa McCarthy, playing at centre forward for Churchill, was covering every blade of grass and linking play between defence and attack, until he had to go off injured. Kilgarvan’s cause was not helped when O’Sullivan received a red card and Churchill’s Ivan Parker grabbed two more goals before the end, to ensure Churchill ran out winners by 4-15 to 0-11.
For Kilgarvan, Patrick O’Shea looked dangerous in attack and Shane O’Sullivan defended resolutely. As the score line suggests, Churchill were dominant throughout the field and Matt Finnerty, Thomas Lenihan, Pa McCarthy and Michael O’Brien really excelled. However, with 2-08 from play, Ivan Parker gets the nod for man of the match.
