SENIOR CO. LEAGUE DIVISION 5 - ROUND 1 - 19/3/2017
2017-03-19 15:43:00
Valentia Young Islanders 4-12 Churchill 0-13.
On a misty day, this game played at O’Connor Park in Valentia resulted in the Islanders winning their first Co. League game since their first round win over Moyvane last year in Div. 4. It brought its own sense of euphoria. The half time score stood at 2-7 to 0-6.
Valentia’s scores came from Jim Lynch(1point), Steve Sheehan (1 goal), Paul O’Connor (1-2), Andy Quigley(0-3,1 a free), John Shanahan(0-1). Churchill scorers: Ivan Parker(0-4, 3 from frees). Pa. McCarthy (0-1).
The second half saw the visitors off to a stronger start and copper fastened it with five points without reply. The points came from Cathal Rogers, Ivan Parker, Cillian Fitzgerald and Micheál O’Brien(2 frees). However, the Young Islanders dusted themselves down with a vital recovery and a breathing space point from Junior Murphy, to be added to by a very well taken point by Ger ’The Plumber’ O’Shea. Valentia’s Andy Quigley was fouled, resulting in a penalty, which he expertly dispatched to the net. The score now stood at 3-10 to 0-13 in Valentia’s favour and then Valentia’s John Shanahan scored 1-2 to give a final result of 4-12 to 0-13 to the home side. The Young Islanders, very much struggling for numbers these days will be happy with a gallant performance and a badly needed win.
