Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-12 Templenoe 0-11
After a great away win against St Marys last weekend, Glenbeigh/Glencar entertained their old rivals Templenoe on Saturday evening. Templenoe have been a bogey side for Glenbeigh/Glencar of late, just managing to beat them in close matches by the odd point. Both teams were without a number of key players due to Kerry commitments, but with Stephen O’Sullivan and Shane Riordan both unavailable for Glenbeigh/Glencar, the management had to juggle things around significantly to try and find a winning formula.
Tommy Cahill was reintroduced after a recent injury, both Jason McKenna and Eugene
Courtney held their places after good performance last weekend and Vincent Hoare started at corner back. There was a strong swirling wind blowing across the field, which was of little advantage to either team. Glenbeigh/Glencar were dealt a big blow in the
opening minutes, when Tommy Cahill had a recurrence of his injury and was replaced by Podge Griffin. Gavan O’ Grady converted his first free to get the scoring underway for the home team, but was quickly responded to by Stephen O Sullivan to level the game. Stephen O’Sullivan converted a free, but moments later, Colin McGillicuddy squared things again with a fine effort. Stephen O’Sullivan was a thorn in the side of the Glenbeigh/Glencar
backs with his darting runs and ability to shoot on sight and scored his third, to tip the balance back in Templenoe's favor. The wind was having a big bearing for both teams, with attempts being missed, but already this had the makings of a great game. Caolim Teahan levelled again with a fine effort from a free for the homeside, in what was developing into a free flowing encounter from end to end. Templenoe opened up an 0-03 to 0-06 advantage, with points from Colm Breen and an impressive Stephen O’Sullivan
(2). Gavan O’Grady converted his second free of the match, before Brian Crowley scored his first point. Feargal Griffin was having a good first half and got on the scoresheet, when his point made it 0-05 to 0-07. Gavan O’Grady, Caolim Teahan, Jason McKenna all linked up well in the Glenbeigh/Glencar's forwards and great work by Daniel Griffin and Bernard
Murphy showing and winning the ball on numerous occasions. Adrian Spillane looked like he had given Templenoe a three point advantage going in at halftime, but up popped one of Glenbeigh/Glencar's most underrated players Ciaran Doyle in the Templenoe half, driving with the ball to score a fine point and reduce the deficit to two. As the halftime whistle blew, both teams had acquitted themselves well in and the crowd knew the game was well and truly in the melting pot.
Glenbeigh/Glencar came out and showed even more resilience and fight in the second half battling for every ball, and it paid dividends when a Gavan O’Grady free and a Jason McKenna point levelled the match at 0-08 a piece. This was a titanic battle at midfield with Glenbeigh/Glencar doing well, and Templenoe were winning their share of breaking ball, but there was no way through the Glenbeigh/Glencar backs, with Vincent Hoare, Ciaran Doyle and Sean Roche keeping Rory O’ Connor’s goal unscathed. Templenoe were reduced to taking opportunities from distance, which was a hard ask given the weather conditions. Templenoe took the lead again with a point from an Adrian Spillane free, but again Glenbeigh/Glencar responded with another well worked team move with Caolim Teahan drawing the game level once more. Brian Crowley edged Templenoe back in front once again in this pulsating encounter, but Glenbeigh/Glencar showed great determination and mental strength responding yet again with a well taken free from Gavan O’Grady. As
the game entered the melting pot, the Glenbeigh/Glencar midfield, half forwards and half backs stepped up a gear and pinned Templenoe back into their own half. A Jason McKenna effort seemed to hang in the air forever, but the locals went into a frenzy when the ball just cleared the crossbar and landed on the top netting, an excellent effort. Templenoe did manage to get the ball up the field, but the Glenbeigh/Glencar’s defence was excellent
overturning the ball. When Caolim Teahan scored his third point of the game, it looked as if Glenbeigh/Glencar would win by two points, but an Adrian Spillane free drew Templenoe back to within one point. Unfortunately for the visitors, there was no time to draw the game level, as the full-time whistle blew. Great credit to Glenbeigh/Glencar who showed great determination in the second half to get over the line and claim a well-deserved win.
Final Score: Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-12, Templenoe 0-11.
